The Pythagorean Theorem is a fundamental concept in geometry that has numerous real-world applications. It is a mathematical formula that states that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the length of the other two sides.

Here's how the formula looks like:

Pythagorean Theorem Formula

c² = a² + b²

where:

  • c = length of the hypotenuse
  • a = length of one of the other sides
  • b = length of the other remaining side

One of the most common real-world applications of the Pythagorean Theorem is calculating the length of a ladder needed to reach a certain height. In this scenario, the height is represented by one side of a right-angled triangle, while the distance from the wall (where the ladder will be leaned against) is represented by the other side. The ladder is the hypotenuse, and its length can be easily calculated using the Pythagorean Theorem formula.

How to Use the Pythagorean Theorem

Let's take a practical example:

Suppose you need to place a ladder against a wall to repair a light fixture that is 5 meters high. The ladder needs to be placed at a distance of 4 meters from the wall. What is the length of the ladder you need?

Using the Pythagorean Theorem formula, we can calculate this as follows:

c² = a² + b²

c² = 4² + 5²

c² = 16 + 25

c² = 41

c = √41 ≈ 6.4 meters

Therefore, you need a ladder that is approximately 6.4 meters long to reach the light fixture 5 meters high when leaning against the wall 4 meters away.
