The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prevents discrimination against individuals with disabilities and makes it unlawful to discriminate in employment against a qualified individual with a disability. The ADA also outlaws discrimination in government services, public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications.
How do I write a letter to request for reasonable accommodation to an employer with disabilities?
If due to some events, an employee becomes disabled, it doesn't mean that he cannot perform a job within the company. A common way is to modify the workplace accommodation or to change the working environment in such a way that a person with limitations in their abilities to do their job. In order to announce this to the employer, a request letter for accommodation can be sent to management and you can refer to the letter written by a person that asks the company for support in their living conditions, by requesting reasonable accommodation near the workplace. What types of accommodations are generally considered reasonable?
- Provide reserved parking;
- Change job activities, tasks;
- Adjust and improve accessibility in a work area;
- Change the presentation of tests and training materials;
- Provide or adjust a product, equipment, or software;
- Allow a flexible work schedule;
- Provide an aid or a service to increase access;
- Reassign to a vacant position.
In the body of your letter include the following:
- Identify the reason why you need accommodation;
- Identify the specific problems that you are having with commuting;
- Avoid writing that you are unable to perform your job;
- If you are qualified with reasonable accommodation to perform the essential functions of the job;
- Employers are not requiring eliminating essential functions of the job;
- Articulate your ideas for reasonable accommodations if any;
- Request that your employer share their accommodation ideas;
- Ask that your employer respond to your request within a reasonable time;
- Send it besides your boss or HR manager, to any additional people, such as a direct supervisor.
Sample Request Letter to Provide Reasonable Accommodation:
- I have been working for {{Company name}} for the past {{Number}} years.
- I am working as a {{Job Position}}.
- I am facing difficulties in {{list activities}} daily as I have recently been confined to a wheelchair;
- Under these conditions, I request you to provide me {{mention support needed}}.
- Therefore, I wish to request a few accommodations so that I may continue working at a high level of productivity.
- I have been working very hard for {{Company name}} and I think my requests are reasonable.
- I wish to be moved to office building 1, which is fully wheelchair equipped.
- This will be immensely helpful in discharging my responsibilities smoothly and compensates for my physical disabilities largely.
- I wish to obtain a wheelchair parking permit, so I will have an easier time getting from the parking lot to my office.
- I thank you for considering the above requests and I hope to hear from you shortly!
- I shall regard this great favor and will be very grateful to you. Thanks.
