A Balanced Scorecard is a system that provides insight into the achievement of a number of quantitative and qualitative goals by means of a group of related financial and non-financial indicators. These goals are based on the critical success factors for realizing the established strategy.

How do you use a Balanced Scorecard?

Business economics techniques such as interviews, Activity based costing and market research determine the performance engines that cause the business results. These are divided into four focus areas (called perspectives), but they continue to form a coherent whole of causes and effects:

• Financial perspective: how attractive should we be to our investors ?
• Customer perspective: how attractive should we be to our customers ?
• Internal processes perspective: where do we need to excel to satisfy financiers and customers ?
• Learning and growth perspective: how do we remain able to realize our strategy ?

For each performance engine and each result measurement, a qualitative objective, a measurement and a target figure are included in the Balanced Scorecard. The initiatives to realize these are also mentioned. See the diagram a little further on for this.
