The Pythagorean Theorem is a fundamental concept in geometry and is widely used in many real-world applications. It provides a means to find the length of a side or diameter of a right triangle given the lengths of the other two sides. In this article, we will discuss how to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of a side or diameter of a right triangle.

The Pythagorean Theorem

The Pythagorean Theorem states that the sum of the squares of the two shorter sides of a right triangle is equal to the square of the length of the longest side, which is known as the hypotenuse. Mathematically, this can be represented as:

a2 + b2 = c2

where a and b are the lengths of the two shorter sides, and c is the length of the hypotenuse.

Applying the Pythagorean Theorem

Let's say we have a right triangle with sides of length a = 3 and b = 4. We can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse, which would be:

c2 = a2 + b2 = 32 + 42 = 9 + 16 = 25

c = √25 = 5

So, the length of the hypotenuse is 5.

Similarly, if we know the length of the hypotenuse and one of the shorter sides, we can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the other shorter side. For example, if we have a right triangle with hypotenuse of length c = 5 and one shorter side of length a = 3, then the length of the other shorter side, b, would be:

b2 = c2 - a2 = 52 - 32 = 25 - 9 = 16

b = √16 = 4

So, the length of the other shorter side is 4.
