Depending on where you live, you may experience extreme wind-related weather events, such as hurricanes or tornadoes, which are life-threatening events that may require more intensive emergency preparedness, including evacuations. If you are unfortunate enough to encounter such a disaster, please follow all advice from local officials and put the safety of your family first.

How do you prepare for heavy winds?

When a heavy wind warning is issued, follow these tips to prepare for the storm:
  • In the event of a strike, visit Environment Canada's Weather Service website and listen to local media for severe weather warnings and advice. Have a battery-powered or crank radio handy as power outages are common during severe storms. Everyone has a responsibility to protect their home and family.
  • Be sure to check the weather forecast before going into the water. Don't row in a storm. If you go out to sea and see bad weather coming, go ashore immediately. Remember to submit a voyage plan to the responsible person and regularly monitor VHF marine or meteorological radio transmissions during the voyage.
  • High wind patterns in Southern California may generate red flag warnings and high wind warnings. These winds can knock down trees, damage electrical equipment, and cause power outages. Planning and preparation are essential when forecasting winds. When strong wind gusts hit Southern California, follow these tips to keep you and your loved ones safe and your home or business ready.

What is the importance of disaster preparedness?

Disaster preparedness is a life-saving, money-saving endeavor that the IFRC is deeply committed to supporting. National Societies must be continually improving their ability to respond quickly and effectively to disasters, in order saving countless lives and reducing the devastating impacts these events have on communities.

What is the meaning of disaster readiness?

As soon as a disaster strikes, we need to be ready to take action. Lives may depend on it! Emergency management is the process of getting everything prepared in advance so that we can minimize damage and suffering during and after a catastrophic event. By following these four simple steps, we can make sure that our families, homes, and communities are safe.
