The Pythagorean Theorem has been used for centuries to calculate distances between two points. It is an important mathematical concept that has many practical applications. Whether you're a student, engineer, or simply looking to brush up on your math skills, understanding the Pythagorean theorem is essential. Use pythagorean theorem to find isosceles triangle side lengths.

What is the Pythagorean Theorem?

The Pythagorean Theorem states that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides. In mathematical terms, it can be written as:

a² + b² = c²

Where "a" and "b" are the lengths of the two shorter sides (also known as legs) of the right triangle, and "c" is the length of the hypotenuse (the longest side).

Is pythagorean theorem only for right triangles?

The Pythagorean Theorem can be used to find the distance between two points in a two-dimensional plane. For example, suppose you have to find the distance between point A (2,5) and point B (7,9). First, you need to find the length of the two sides of the right-angled triangle, as shown in the diagram below:

from the diagram, we can determine that:

a = 7 - 2 = 5

b = 9 - 5 = 4

Now, we can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse (c), which is the distance between point A and point B:

c² = a² + b²

c² = 5² + 4²

c² = 25 + 16

c² = 41

c ≈ 6.4 (nearest foot)

Therefore, the distance between point A and point B is approximately 6.4 feet.
