Example Problem:

Suppose you have a right triangle with legs measuring 5 cm and 12 cm. What is the length of the hypotenuse?

  1. Identify the hypotenuse as x.
  2. The legs are 5 cm and 12 cm.
  3. Plug in the values into the formula: 5^2 + 12^2 = x^2.
  4. Simplify: x^2 = 169.
  5. Solve for x: x = sqrt(169) = 13 cm.

So the length of the hypotenuse is 13 cm.
